Vietnam Visa Extension
Getting a visa extension means acquiring permission from the government to stay longer in Vietnam when your current visa is about to expire. You may be able to extend your visa while in Vietnam without leaving the country. You should apply to extend before your current visa expires.
How much longer you can stay in Vietnam will depend on the type of visa you currently have.
- If you enter Vietnam with a 15-day visa exemption you can extend your visa for a further 15 days, 1 month, or 3 months. Kindly note that you cannot return using a visa exemption within 30 days.
- If your current visa is a 1-month visa you can get it extended for another 10 days, 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months.
- If your current visa is a 3-month visa you can get it extended for another 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months.
How many times you can apply to extend your visa will depend on your current visa and the duration of the extension you did.
The procedure can take 4-10 days (not available on weekends and Public Holidays) depend on the duration of the extension you want to apply for.

► Can I stay in Vietnam after my visa expires?
You can not legally stay in Vietnam after your visa expires. The visa's expiration date is simply the last day on which you can use that visa to stay in Vietnam.
As soon as you notice that you overstay your visa in Vietnam then you should have your visa extended immediately directly with the Immigration Department or through a travel agent. You will most likely need to pay additional fees on top of the visa extension fee. This is to avoid any potential delay or hold-off at the airport you may face later. Check out what happens if you overstay your visa in Vietnam and the penalties.
